We're supporting our local farmers and souring most of our products from the state.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut this parade isn't just a Stateside thing.\u003cbr/\u003eIke \"Mike\" Matthiessen, who has been elected 2016 Pasadena Tournament of Roses president, said that while the bulk of parade-telecast viewers are from the east coast of the United States, an estimated additional 25 million watch overseas -- and that figure is possibly considerable more, as international viewer ratings are difficult to compute.\u003cbr/\u003eMore certainly, non-American visitors flock to the parade each year.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I could tell you stories about how people in other countries know where Pasadena is just because of the Rose Parade,\" Matthiessen explained. \"And that's something very special to them. They say, 'I know Pasadena. You're the parade people. I want to see that parade someday.'\"\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors as well as parade viewers from China may see a bit of their own history in \"A Bright Future,\" which veteran designer Charles Meier's Paradiso Parade Floats was commissioned to construct for international real estate and investment service provider, Singpoli Group, L.L.C..\u003cbr/\u003e\"This design was inspired by Chinese decorative arts and, specifically, Han Dynasty arts and crafts,\" Meier noted. \"You can see that detail in ornamental border that circles the entire entry, as well as the medallion on the front of the float that features the Han Dynasty dragon. The dragon and the phoenix, of course, in Chinese culture, are a very important pairing. So, we wanted to make sure that while the primary focus of the float is the phoenix. We wanted to make sure that we represented the dragon in some way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMeier also has a second entry, a whimsical, animated hippo he and his crew built for the Zappos.com shoe retailer. \u003cbr/\u003eAs if one of these epic productions wasn't enough.\u003cbr/\u003eNevertheless, Meier realizes he's got a first-world problem on his hands -- make that a blessing.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to make sure that when people see any float that we create, that they not only enjoy it from an aesthetic point of view, but that they feel something, that they feel a sense of wonder and joy at what's passing,\" he said. \"Because this really is something out of the ordinary.
