Pan nutcracker\u003cbr/\u003eThe village of Seiffen, outside Dresden, is the official \"Christmas village\" of Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the place to go to buy traditional wooden toys and festive ornaments - and it has a history going back hundreds of years. \u003cbr/\u003eSnow and ice cover Seiffen, providing a frosty white backdrop to the traditional Christmas trade of the village. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists , and shoppers from all around Germany, come here to buy decorations such as these wooden candle pyramids, angels, nutcrackers, candlesticks and toys.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the Christmas period, candles softly illuminate the streets of Seiffen, and the wooden handicrafts are sold in workshops. \u003cbr/\u003eChristine Huebner from Bavaria says it's  unique here. \u003cbr/\u003eSeiffen is located to the south of Dresden, in the Erzgebirge Mountain area, near the Czech Republic border. \u003cbr/\u003eThe seasonal trade is the most important source of income for the village.\u003cbr/\u003eWalter and Edeltraut Thiele from Hamburg say it's clear to see how much love and care people put into their products.\u003cbr/\u003eThis area was once a mining centre, but residents turned to wood carving when the tin ore ran out. \u003cbr/\u003eSeiffen soon became noted for its toys and Christmas crafts. \u003cbr/\u003eThrough the generations, Seiffen wood crafters became masters of their art.\u003cbr/\u003eSven Reichel, from Seiffener Volkskunst eg. explains how the wooden animals are made in two steps.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first showroom was opened at the Seiffen Volkskunst eg. in 1958. A total of 30 people work here and about 500 products leave the factory each year.\u003cbr/\u003eRing turning is the technique used to create the wooden animals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe development of this unique method in and around Seiffen started at the beginning of the nineteenth century. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a special form of wood turning, appropriate for making animals, houses, and small accessories.\u003cbr/\u003eThe turner forms a ring out of a section of tree trunk. They then plane the surface before the finished rings are sliced apart to reveal the finished animal.\u003cbr/\u003eSven Reichelt says these products are then sold all around the world.\u003cbr/\u003e( Note: the finished, turned figures are sold in bags of 6 and cost 14 Euros  - approx. $19 USD).\u003cbr/\u003eThe traditional nutcrackers were originally made in the nineteenth and can come in the shape of a soldier, policeman, king, or forester.\u003cbr/\u003eThe giant nutcrackers cost around 480 Euros - approx. $650 USD). \u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast, the \"R嚙線chermann\" (smoking man) represents the easygoing and sympathetic folk type, a reflection of the fact that pipe smoking had, by this time, almost become a folk custom. \u003cbr/\u003eThese little figues can cost between 39 and 20 Euros ( $52 - $27 USD).\u003cbr/\u003eThe origin of the candle arch (Schwibbogen) is closely tied to the Christmas gathering of the miners from Mettenschicht.  It's thought the miners would hang their burning lamps around the mine entrance during carol services.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the workshop shoppers can see how these decorations are created, painted and put together. \u003cbr/\u003eThe typical wooden toys and the festive Christmas decorations are still made by over a hundred independent families and in middle-sized
