The fringe...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe Edinburgh Festival, the world's largest art festival, has been growing ever since it  began 49 years ago.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt first it consisted of the finest quality acts, with a small fringe of well-meaning  amateurs. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fringe festival led many to stardom, including John Cleese, David Frost and Dudley  Moore.\u003cbr/\u003eBut nowadays a number of acts in the unregulated Fringe Festival attempt to push back  the boundaries of taste.  \u003cbr/\u003eSome are saying it's time for censorship.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Miami City Ballet performing George Balanchine's interpretation of Tchaikovsky's  Nutcracker.  \u003cbr/\u003eA visually stunning production which is part of the highbrow International Festival,  gathering the world's top professional artists together.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's always been another side to the festival as well - the Fringe, which attracts acts  like the Oxford Headlights, a semi-professional company. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have their own whimsical approach to Shakespeare involving plenty of audience  participation and song and dance routines.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the unregulated fringe festival has grown, the limits of taste have been stretched  further and further.  \u003cbr/\u003eAmong the more than 600 companies, some manage to outrage and shock in their  attempts to woo audiences.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Fringe act which has attracted a lot of criticism so far is called \"Club Swing\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe Australian group bills itself as a lesbian erotic act.\u003cbr/\u003eIn spite of calls for it to be banned, the Fringe organisers say that would go against the  spirit of the Festival.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The public have the choice to see something. It's perfectly apparent from the publicity  when the material is slightly risquĂŠ in any form, and the public can then choose not to  go and see it. But when you start talking about whether it's suitable or not, well then  you're getting into the realms of censorship and that's the kind of thing you expect from  perhaps communist countries, but not from Britain.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Hilary Strong, Fringe Festival Director\u003cbr/\u003eNot everyone agrees.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean must we have sex? We all know what sex is. Must we have it portrayed  nonstop? I was at a play recently and I think they were hoping I would walk out, but I  didn't I stuck it out.
