Close up needles being removed from arm\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture is well known in the Western world, especially for treating pain. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the use of needles may scare children, making it difficult to treat them.\u003cbr/\u003eNow one hospital in Germany, is using a novel treatment to get children treated with acupuncture - by using a laser instead of a needle.\u003cbr/\u003eVivien Gleitzer is on her way to get an acupuncture treatment, but she's not scared.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike regular acupuncture, this experimental therapy doesn't involve any needles.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead, Dr. Barbara Niehaus uses laser beams.\u003cbr/\u003eShe places the laser sensors onto Vivien's skin, and controls the beams via a remote computer.\u003cbr/\u003eNiehaus, an anesthesiologist, received training in acupuncture in Beijing, China. \u003cbr/\u003eUpon her return to the hospital, she passed a certification exam to be an accredited practitioner.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter receiving her accreditation, she started using lasers to treat pain in children. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's currently at an experimental stage only at the he Kinderkrankenhaus Sankt Augustin hospital in Bonn, Germany.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the anaesthetics department we improved our pain treatment. With help of this pain scale you can tell if the pain was more or less,\" says Niehaus.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese traditional doctors have practiced acupuncture for centuries. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to this discipline, needles help treat a series of diseases as well as pain. \u003cbr/\u003eNeedles need to go into specific points in the body.\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture started in China and quickly spread to Japan, Korea and other parts of Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Lucilly Hung treats many patients with the help of acupuncture.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of her patients, Phoebe Cho, suffers from multiple sclerosis. \u003cbr/\u003eAs a result of this condition, Cho is in pain, but daily appointments with Dr. Hung have helped her deal with it.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Hung studied acupuncture at the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, in southern China. \u003cbr/\u003eHer office is located in Hong Kong. So for westerners who practice homeopathy this is the most natural way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the United States future doctors and nurses are learning about acupuncture and herbs along with anatomy and physiology at a growing number of medical schools. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's an example of how alternative medicine has become mainstream. And it's often done with Uncle Sam's help.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has spent more than $22 million to help medical and nursing schools start teaching about alternative medicine lesson plans that some critics say are biased toward unproven remedies.  \u003cbr/\u003eAdditional tax money has been spent to recruit and train young doctors to do research in this field, launching some into careers as alternative medicine providers. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors need to know about popular remedies so they can discuss them nonjudgmentally and give competent advice, the government says, and many
