Tracking shot of taxis parked near Circo Massimo\u003cbr/\u003eRome taxi drivers have staged another \"wildcat\", or unauthorised, strike to protest planned reforms by the government to liberalise the industry.\u003cbr/\u003eCommuters around the city had to find alternative ways to get to work on Wednesday thanks to an unauthorised walkout by drivers, many of whom gathered at a large demonstration in Rome's Circo Massimo.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's industrial action followed a spontaneous partial strike that was organised - unannounced and unauthorised - on Friday in Rome, Milan and Naples to protest against the liberalisation of taxi licences.   \u003cbr/\u003ePremier Mario Monti's government, which came to power two months ago to try to save Italy from financial ruin, has passed tough austerity measures aimed at reducing Italy's massive public debt.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is now focusing a second phase of measures on boosting economic growth, including opening up professions that traditionally restrict newcomers, like taxi drivers and pharmacists, to encourage competition.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to taxi-drivers the liberalisation of their service would have only negative effects, such as higher prices and lower quality, and would not help the growth of Italian economy.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Massimo Rancinelli, president of a Roman taxi cooperative called \"samarcanda\", taxi drivers are already working in a risky profession with few privileges.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't consider ourselves people with privileges in any way, because all that we invest in our work is a personal risk,\" he said driving past the Coliseum on Wednesday. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is easier for the government to hit the taxi-drivers instead of hitting the real lobbies such as energy, water and highways, these are the real economic powers.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe liberalisation measures, which the Italian government expects to implement by the end of the month, would increase the number of taxi licences and, so the government claims, reduce prices.  \u003cbr/\u003eHowever many drivers feel the reforms will have an opposite effect.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are fully aware of the fact that a liberalisation would bring an increase of the fares and would be a complete deregulation.
