Wide shot people watching video premiere on screen\u003cbr/\u003eCuba marked World Aids Day on Saturday with events including the premiere of a music video featuring some of Havana's leading performers.\u003cbr/\u003eCuba currently has just over 9-thousand people diagnosed as HIV carriers, while being one of the few countries that was able to provide free anti-retroviral medication to all its sick.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first cases diagnosed with HIV on the island were in 1986 and since then 9,039 have been identified: 81 percent are men and the remaining 19 percent are women.\u003cbr/\u003eOf that total, 3,427 developed AIDS and 1,550 died from the disease according to Cuban government health reports.\u003cbr/\u003eFor an island with over 11-million inhabitants, these numbers are considered low and local officials feel it shows that their programmes are working.\u003cbr/\u003eBy far, the largest group affected is gay men. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2000, the Cuban Ministry of Health decided to create special projects aimed at helping this particular group.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are developing a series of campaigns directed at social acceptance of homosexuality. Cuban national media and do away with the silence created by taboos about sexual diversity.\u003cbr/\u003eRegueiro believes Cuban society has slowly been bringing down the walls of discrimination. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to studies by the National Office of Statistics, in 2001 only 2 percent of men were willing to admit having a homosexual relationship, while in 2007 that number rose to 5 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe National Centre for Prevention has trained over 5-thousand volunteers who work as promoters visiting schools, hospitals, and prisons to help avoid the spread of the virus among non-positives and also to give support to those whom already live with the virus.\u003cbr/\u003eWorld AIDS Day was instituted by the United Nations in 1998 to remember the date when the first
