Cutaway reporters\u003cbr/\u003eBritish member of parliament George Galloway has vehemently rejected a U.S. Senate subcommittee's claim that Saddam Hussein awarded him lucrative allocations under the UN oil-for-food programme. \u003cbr/\u003eThe subcommittee, chaired by Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman, claimed that Galloway allegedly funnelled allocations through a fund he established in 1998 to help a four-year-old Iraqi girl suffering from leukaemia and received allocations worth 20 million barrels from 2000 to 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eHaving flown from the United Kingdom to address the claims personally, Galloway said: \"I am not now nor have I ever been an oil trader and neither has anyone on my behalf.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe accused Coleman of sullying his name with the accusations. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said he was an opponent of Saddam Hussein when British and American governments and businessmen were selling him guns and gas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe daylong hearing was reviewing three major reports from the subcommittee of the US Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, which studied in great detail how Saddam made billions in illegal oil sales despite UN sanctions imposed in 1991 after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.\u003cbr/\u003eColeman said Galloway and others who received oil allocations, including prominent Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, then paid kickbacks to Saddam as part of the deal.\u003cbr/\u003eGalloway rejected that and accused Coleman of never having contacted him about the charges.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also defended his opposition to the UN sanctions and the US-led Iraq war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe oil-for-food programme, which ran from 1996-2003, was designed to let Saddam's government sell oil in exchange for humanitarian goods to help the Iraqi people cope with crippling UN sanctions.\u003cbr/\u003eColeman claimed that Saddam received more than US 300-thousand dollars in surcharges on allocations involving Galloway.   \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking after the hearing, Coleman later questioned Galloway's testimony, saying: \"If in fact he lied to this committee, there will have to be consequences.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAsked whether Galloway violated his oath to tell the truth before the committee, Coleman said: \"I don't know.
