We saw them spike when the brouhaha was going on in Germany throughout the CIA's Chief. We're now getting 75 to 80 percent of our business outside of North America. Germany is the top country,\" said Callas.\u003cbr/\u003eSilent Circle is one of a host of online security companies cashing in on swarms of new security-conscious customers around the world who want to shield their communications from foreign governments, and nowhere is the market hotter than in Germany for firms pitching security.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 75 percent of their business is now outside of North America, said Callas. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd Germany, where there's been a sharp cooling down of relations between Berlin and Washington over the past year, is their top country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that culturally, Germany has seen privacy problems in their recent past,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are people who remember the communists. There is still a cultural sore spot over security and privacy, an understanding of what can go wrong better than any other place in the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the technology has Silicon Valley roots, the servers are in Canada and Switzerland, two countries with strong privacy protections. \u003cbr/\u003eCallas said they have begun staffing a new headquarters in Geneva, where privacy is a constitutional right.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo weeks ago, Silent Circle also began selling a secure smart phone, and Callas said they plan to ship 10 million in the next three years. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir first run, he said, sold out.\u003cbr/\u003eAt CeBIT, a leading tech industry event held annually in the German city of Hannover, Deutsche Telekom was among several companies this year to launch new security products on the back of Snowden's revelations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I want to send a personal thanks to the NSA because we wouldn't be having this discussing if that hadn't happened,\" Reinhard Clemens, a Deutsche Telekom board member, told reporters. \u003cbr/\u003e\"That was the best marketing campaign we've ever had.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDeutsche Telekom, known for its T-Mobile brand in the United States, now sells a smart phone application that encrypts voice and data traffic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe app was developed together with Berlin-based firm GSMK, an offshoot of the German hacking group Chaos Computer Club. \u003cbr/\u003eCustomers wanting an all-in-one solution can buy GSMK's 2,750-US dollar secure cellphone that will protect a user's confidential communications from all but the most dedicated eavesdroppers.\u003cbr/\u003eChief Executive Bjoern Rupp said his company had seen a surge of interest in its encryption technology since details of the NSA's surveillance capabilities were first leaked last year.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Certainly, in year one after Snowden, this has led to an explosion of demand and awareness,\" Rupp said.\u003cbr/\u003eSince launching in 2003, the company has sold about 100,000 secure devices, but the number of apps it has sold in the past year thanks to their low entry cost and the partnership with Deutsche Telekom is \"in another dimension\" said Rupp, without revealing a precise figure.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish rival Vodafone, meanwhile, launched its own \"Secure Call\" app at the CeBIT fair with the claim that it would allow users to make \"calls that are as secure as those of the German government\".\u003cbr/\u003eMerkel herself used to be photographed with her trusty Nokia slider phone. \u003cbr/\u003eSince reports surfaced last year that the NSA had listed her among its foreign intelligence targets, the Chancellor has studiously avoided being seen with such a low-end device in public.\u003cbr/\u003eHer new best friend, as widely reported, is a hardened, top-range BlackBerry outfitted with a custom-made security suite made by German company Secusmart - endorsed for sensitive communications by Germany's Federal Office for Information Security.\u003cbr/\u003eApparently seizing on the opportunity, BlackBerry this week announced it was buying Secusmart.\u003cbr/\u003eFor those who don't want to take any chances, the revelations have also sparked a retro trend. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country's business weekly Wirtschaftswoche recently reported sales of typewriters have been rising for the first time in years.\u003cbr/\u003eGerman companies, keen to protect their trade secrets, have apparently been turning to this low-fi technology to make sure their business correspondence with foreign clients isn't intercepted by rivals capable of hacking into their computer networks.\u003cbr/\u003ePatrick Sensburg, a member of Merkel's conservative bloc and chair of the parliamentary committee investigating alleged NSA spying in German, even suggested - only half-jokingly - that he and his fellow lawmakers might start using typewriters to hide the panel's sensitive work from the prying eyes of US spies.\u003cbr/\u003eBerlin, Germany - 7 August 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
