engagement\" between the EU and the US when they met in Washington on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe meeting came two days after President Barack Obama's State of the Union address in which he mentioned briefly the launching of free-trade negotiations between the United States and the European Union. \u003cbr/\u003eKerry and Ashton both expressed support for such a deal, with Kerry saying he though there were \"huge possibilities.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe US and Europe already account for nearly half the world's economic output and such an alliance could bring benefits to both sides of the Atlantic as well as making it easier to compete with China, a rising economic powerhouse. \u003cbr/\u003eGenerally free-trade agreements draw more support from open-market Republicans and business leaders. \u003cbr/\u003eThe former Democratic President, Bill Clinton, had to overcome fierce labour union and Democratic resistance to win approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993. \u003cbr/\u003eObama was accused by Republicans during last year's campaign of being too European in his thinking. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso, Europe is still confronted by even more dire economic woes than the US \u003cbr/\u003eThe German economy, Europe's largest, shrank by a worse-than-expected 0.6 percent in last year's final three months, figures out on Thursday showed. \u003cbr/\u003eSo even if Obama is able to negotiate such a complicated deal, he's likely to face some opposition from Republicans who accuse him of wanting to make the US more like
