bodies were recovered from the sea after a luxury cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, late on January 13th, sending water pouring in through a 160-foot (50-metre) gash in the hull, and forcing the evacuation of some 4,200 people from the listing vessel early on January 14th, said a member of the Italian Coast Guard.
There were reports that three other people had died after the accident which occurred late on Friday night January 13th near the tiny Tuscan island of Giglio, but those reports were not yet confirmed, said Coast Guard Commander Francesco Paolillo.
Helicopters plucked to safety some 50 people who were trapped on the ship, the Costa Concordia, after the liner listed so badly they couldn't launch lifeboats, Paolillo told The Associated Press in Rome by telephone from his command in the Tuscan port city of Livorno.
The ship was on an eight-day pleasure cruise around Mediterranean ports.
When the ship ran aground the passengers were instructed to put on life jackets and take to the life rafts but witnesses said they couldn't get into the boats, because the cruise liner was tilting so much the boats couldn't be lowered into the cold, night sea.
The passengers were eventually rescued by one of several boats in the area that came to their aid.
As dawn approached, a painstaking search of the 290-metre (950-foot) long ship's interior was being conducted to see if anyone might be left trapped inside, Paolillo said.
Some 30 people were reported injured, most of them suffering only bruises, but at least two people were reported in grave condition.
The evacuees were taking refuge in schools, hotels, and a church on the tiny island of Giglio, a popular vacation isle about 18 miles (25 kilometres) off Italy's central west coast.
Those evacuated by helicopter were flown to Grosseto, while others, rescued by local ferries pressed into emergency service, took survivors to the port of Porto Santo Stefano on the nearby mainland.
Paolillo said the exact circumstances of the accident were still unclear, but that the first alarm went off about 10:30 p.m local time (9.30pm GMT) on January 13th, about three hours after the Costa Concordia had begun its voyage from the port of Civitavecchia, en route to its first port of call, Savona, in northwestern Italy.
Paolillo said the vessel "hit an obstacle", but it wasn't clear if it might have hit a rocky reef in the waters off Giglio.
The Costa Concordia was believed to have set sail with 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew members.
Daylight on January 14th revealed the huge hulk of the stricken luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia, as it lay on its side on rocks off the Italian island of Giglo.
On a clear sunny day, January 14th, the ship could be seen lying virtually flat, its right-hand side submerged in the water.
The ship was on an eight-day pleasure cruise around Mediterranean ports.
When the ship ran aground the passengers were instructed to put on life jackets and take to the life rafts but witnesses said they couldn't get into the boats because the cruise liner was tilting so much the boats couldn't be Concordia was believed to have set sail with 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew members.
The search was continuing on January 15th of the stricken cruise ship, the Costa Concordia, and the Italian coast guard announced on the afternoon of January 15th that two more bodies had been found aboard the ship, as it lay on its side off rocks on the island of Giglio.
Passengers on board the ship, which grounded off the Italian island of Giglio and took on water before listing sharply, spoke on Saturday of their ordeal.
Passengers complained the crew failed to give instructions on how to evacuate, and once the emergency became clear, delayed lowering the lifeboats until the ship was listing too heavily for many of them to be released.
One passenger on board was Mark Plath from Little Rock, Arkansas, USA.
"It was very difficult for the lifeboats to get down because the ship was .... at an angle and so the lifeboat can't go down the side of the boat like this. And so one of the boats was full of 200 people, went down and caught on the railing and the lifeboat tipped sideways and then fell and swung and everybody was screaming."
Fellow passenger Justin Baines, also from Little Rock, said they were warned not to jump from the ship into the sea but were glad they did.
"At the very end, before we jumped off, one of the crew members was actually telling us we need to stay on. And that's when Mark was saying that we don't need to stay on because it was sinking so fast. And where we were standing is actually underwater right now so obviously we needed to get off right then. And that's when about ... 100.. 150 people started swimming."
Helicopters plucked to safety some 50 people who were trapped on the ship, some survivors were rescued by boats in the area, and an official said some people jumped from the ship.
Coast guard rescuers were continuing to search the ship for passengers.
Paolillo said the exact circumstances of the accident were still unclear, but that the first alarm went off about 10:30 p.m., (2130 GMT) about three hours after the Concordia had begun its voyage from the port of Civitavecchia, en route to its first port of call, Savona, in northwestern Italy.
Costa Cruises said the Costa Concordia was sailing on a cruise across the Mediterranean Sea, starting from Civitavecchia with scheduled calls to Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Cagliari and Palermo.
It said about 1,000 Italian passengers were onboard, as well as more than 500 Germans, about 160 French and about 1,000 crew members.
On February 27th a fire in the generator room of a cruise ship carrying more than a thousand people left the vessel adrift in a region of the Indian Ocean where Somali pirates have been active, officials said.
No casualties were reported, but the accident aboard the Costa Allegra occurred about six weeks after the Concordia, another Italian cruise ship owned by the same company, capsized off Italy, killing 25 people and leaving seven missing and presumed dead.
Tug boats from the island nation of Seychelles were steaming to the powerless ship.
But the tugs were not expected to reach it until the afternoon of February 28th at the earliest and a top Seychelles military official said he could not yet say when the cruise ship might be brought back to port.
The Italian coast guard said the fire left the cruise liner "without propulsion", meaning the ship, with 636 passengers and 413 crew members aboard, was adrift in the sea because the engines weren't working.
Costa Crociere, which is based in Genoa, Italy, said in a statement that its ship was about 20 miles (12.5 kilometres) from Alphonse Island, one of the atolls in the Seychelles, a nation of islands and atolls that is a popular tourist destination.
Seychelles officials were investigating evacuating passengers using the small airstrip on Alphonse Island.
The Allegra was built in Italian shipyards in 1992, is 615-feet (188 meters) long, and has eight passenger decks and 399 cabins.
On March 1st the disabled cruise ship arrived in port in the island nation of the Seychelles after three days at sea without power.
The Seychelles Red Cross set up several tents to assist any passengers needing help and the British High Commission and the French and Italian embassies were at the port to assist their citizens.
Tour operators lined up dozens of buses ready to take passengers to either the airport or a Seychelles resort.
"We will assist them with basic first aid, depending on what the Ministry of Health see in the triage.
