I'd expect us to sell more copies than anybody else of this book.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ruth Evans, manager of Books Etc bookshop\u003cbr/\u003eThe financial ruin of one of Britain's most prestigious merchant banks made world headlines -- Leeson was viewed either as a financial whiz-kid whose breathtaking gamble backfired or a bumbler who just kept on getting it wrong.\u003cbr/\u003eLeeson is now hoping that the book he wrote from his Frankfurt prison while awaiting deporation to Singapore will set the record straight.\u003cbr/\u003eHis wife says there were quite a few surprises in the book for her, too.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen I read the book there was things I learnt about Nick. I mean he was leading a double life -- Nick the trader, Nick the husband and I just wish he'd have told me what was going on. I didn't have a clue what was happening and I thought that we were a happily married couple sharing everything and we were not. We were not. Like I say, Nick was leading a double life. And I've got lots to ask Nick and I suppose at the time I was quite angry and I just thought I'd like to give him a punch and ask, Why did you do it?\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Lisa Leeson, wife of Nick Leeson\u003cbr/\u003eThe first Lisa Leeson claims to have known about her husband's ill-advised gamble was when they both fled Singapore early last year.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom then on, she found herself at the centre of a press mob.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was a far cry from their start in life -- when Lisa married Nick, the son of a plasterer, they were both junior clerks in Barings.\u003cbr/\u003eLeeson had left school at 18 -- having failed maths.\u003cbr/\u003eThree years ago, the couple moved to Singapore and Nick Leeson began the chain of events that would ultimately lead to the financial down-fall of Barings.\u003cbr/\u003eLeeson took a simple risk. He bet that the Nikkei index of top Japanese companies would rise after a year in the doldrums.\u003cbr/\u003eBut his gamble came unstuck with the Kobe earthquake, which sent Japanese share prices tumbling.\u003cbr/\u003eLeeson kept buying more contracts -- even setting up bogus accounts to hid the mounting debts -- hoping for an upturn in share prices. But the market kept on heading down.\u003cbr/\u003eBarings was not ignorant of the scale of the deals -- only weeks before the crash, the bank transferred 800 (m) million pounds from London to cover down payments on Leeson's contracts.\u003cbr/\u003eIn February of last year -- realising the scale of the impending crash -- Leeson and his wife fled for Malaysia.\u003cbr/\u003eThey attempted to return to England but were intercepted in Germany, where Leeson was imprisoned awaiting extradition to Singapore.\u003cbr/\u003eBy November, he was back in Singapore to face charges of forgery.\u003cbr/\u003eHis wife says she believes Nick was not attempting to defraud the bank but simply did not want to own up to his mistakes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe directors seemed to have such high expectations of Nick, calling him like this whiz of a trader and asking him, you know telling him, you've got to make more profits. And I suppose he sort of wanted to be the whiz of a trader and I suppose he wanted to protect me, he didn't want to tell me that he wasn't doing as well as I was led to believe he was doing. \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Lisa Leeson, wife of Nick Leeson\u003cbr/\u003eSince his arrest and imprisonment, Lisa Leeson appears to have got the measure of the press.\u003cbr/\u003ePretty, blond and articulate, Lisa has become her husband's best P-R weapon.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, she says, the two are not going to profit from her husband's misadventure.\u003cbr/\u003eLisa now has six-and-a-half years of visiting this prison to look forward to.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says she is thinking of joining Virgin airlines, so she can fly back and forth to Singapore without worrying about the cost.\u003cbr/\u003eBarings is now in the hands of the Dutch I-N-G bank.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the bank's future appears secure. \u003cbr/\u003eStill, the rogue trader that toppled Barings is still lurking in its shadows.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon, UK.
