holiday - the Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe streets are already bustling with people shopping for decorations for the festive holiday, which falls on 26 January this year.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople were shopping for decorations adorned with the buffalo - the Vietnamese zodiac animal of 2009. \u003cbr/\u003eThey were also buying little red envelopes, known as a hong bao in Mandarin, which are used to to give money to children.\u003cbr/\u003eMost years, including this one, Tet is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year.\u003cbr/\u003eVietnam's Lunar New Year shares many of the same customs with its Chinese counterpart, although this year is the year of the buffalo in Vietnam, while in China it's the year of the ox.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring Tet, every house is usually decorated with a tree - peach flower and kumquat trees are very popular.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the global economic turbulence and Vietnam's high inflation rate of nearly 23 percent, people were still keen to spend money on decorating their houses for the celebrations.\u003cbr/\u003eOne man shopping for a kumquat tree said even though his annual income had not been very good, it was the new year holiday and so things \"had to be perfect\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe director of a supermarket in Hanoi said he wasn't feeling the effects of the credit crunch, with more people than ever coming to
