And there's only one man to go to when the lights go out. \u003cbr/\u003eJumbled masses of electricity cables, TV and Internet lines hang over the narrow alleyways of the Palestinian refugee camp of Shatila.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, with a seemingly never ending web of wires, the job of an electrician looks to be impossible.\u003cbr/\u003eBy his own account, Abu Wadiyeh is a man very much in demand.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the chief electrician in Shatila, it's his responsibility to ensure that the camp's more than 20,000 residents get their power.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I first started working, I ran away. I thought to myself, 'Why would I do this?'\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The network of wires is a spider web. ... I was in awe. How was I supposed to figure all that out?\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut with five years on the job, Abu Wadiyeh has indeed figured it out. \u003cbr/\u003eHe oversees his electrical empire from a dusty, white-washed building that serves as one of four substations connecting the camp to the Lebanese state grid. \u003cbr/\u003eThe camp was founded in 1949 by the International Committee of the Red Cross to take in hundreds of Palestinians who fled their homes during the war surrounding the creation of Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was heavily damaged during the 15-year Lebanese civil war beginning in 1975, and particularly after the 1982 Israeli invasion. \u003cbr/\u003eToday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) says there are some 22,000 Palestinian refugees registered to Shatila, but only about 8,000 live here. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rest of the residents are a combination of Lebanese, Filipinos, Sri Lankans, and now a large contingent of Syrians who have fled the civil war next door, according to UNRWA.\u003cbr/\u003eAbu Wadiyeh, a 34-year-old Palestinian who was born in Syria, moved to Shatila at the age of 16. \u003cbr/\u003eHis birth name is Mohammed Hazina, but his friends dubbed him Abu Wadiyeh, he says, because of his resemblance to the Syrian singer George Wassouf, whose own nickname is Abu Wadiyeh.\u003cbr/\u003eHe sold makeup for a few years before finding work as an apprentice electrician making house calls in the camp.\u003cbr/\u003eIt turns out he had a talent for the job, and eventually the camp committee hired him for US 400 dollars per month to tend to the government-supplied electricity grid. \u003cbr/\u003eHe works six days a week, usually starting around eight in the morning and finishing near midnight. \u003cbr/\u003eThe work flow is structured around the regular rolling power outages that affect the camp, as well as the rest of Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003eThese happen at regular four-hour intervals during the day, giving him time to make repairs on frayed lines or replace damaged connectors.\u003cbr/\u003eJobs range from small repairs that can be done in minutes to large projects that can take months to complete. \u003cbr/\u003eHis biggest this year took three months working with a team of labourers to install 2.3 kilometres (1.4 miles) of new cables to upgrade the main lines throughout the camp.\u003cbr/\u003eBut most days he's occupied with more mundane problems.\u003cbr/\u003eHe banters with passers-by, teases his assistant and tells dirty jokes. The moment he finishes one cigarette, he lights another. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is, all told, not a bad job, he says.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a job that's also earned him the appreciation of his fellow camp residents.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What I gained from my work is the people's affection for me,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I like people and I want them to be satisfied. This is a camp at the end of the day and there's no security. You have to be merciful with people.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt's clear Wadiyeh is a fixture of camp life, and he's not going anywhere. \u003cbr/\u003e\"That's why people like me,\" he says, \"and they wouldn't let me go. Once there was damage and I started fixing and did not pay attention that the fuses were touching each other which causes them to explode. The fuse exploded, flew and hit my leg and wounded it.
