Various black and white footage of Fidel Castro's convoy entering Havana City\u003cbr/\u003eOnce again Havana received a convoy of jeeps and trucks carrying Communist Youth students and Sierra Maestra veterans on Saturday, to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of Fidel Castro's triumphant arrival in Havana on 8 January, 1959.\u003cbr/\u003eThe event was not attended by any high-ranking government officials, but people did come out to cheer the caravan as it arrived. This year the celebration ended up in the neighbourhood of Cotorro about 20 km (12 miles) from central Havana\u003cbr/\u003eThe month of January is traditionally celebrated as the start of a New Year around the world, but in Cuba the celebrations are held primarily to remember the day dictator Fulgencio Batista abandoned the island on 1 January, 1959, and Castro's rebels took control.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the time, Castro was at the southernmost end of the island near Santiago de Cuba, almost 1,000 km (675 miles) from Havana.\u003cbr/\u003eHe and his rebels commandeered tanks, trucks, and jeeps and headed north for the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trip lasted a week as the caravan stopped in towns and villages along the way, greeted by cheering crowds.\u003cbr/\u003eSeven days into 1959, Castro and his troops arrived in Havana and were met by tens of thousands of sympathisers along Malecon Avenue.\u003cbr/\u003eFidel's trip across the island and his arrival to the
