So this land is holy.\" explains Rana Siavashi, a student. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They have sparked such spirituality not only here in Iran but also in other parts of the world that is why this big number of youth who should naturally go and have fun somewhere else prefer to come here. \" adds cleric Hojat Abbasi.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Iranian military and paramilitary forces are still missing and bodies are still being retrieved from the former battlefield. \u003cbr/\u003eBereaved women pray for lost sons and brothers, others recite the Quran in memory of the dead. \u003cbr/\u003eA theatrical performance plays out Iran's interpretation of key events of the conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eMany visitors call the war sites Iran's Karbala (the holiest city in Shiite Islam which is located in Iraq) to express the reverence which they give this place. \u003cbr/\u003e \"I don't regret that I decided to spend the holidays here at all. I had other options for travel and I might have enjoyed them, but here is so different. I suggest everyone to come and visit this place at least once. You're not going to regret it. It is a good experience.\"  says Mojtaba Borhan, a visitor from Tehran. \u003cbr/\u003eZahra Bashiri Damghani  also shunned more popular tourist destinations to come here and pay her respects. \u003cbr/\u003e \"One can always go abroad or to tourist destinations, jungles, sea, etc. But I always wanted to come here at least once to see where our martyrs fought,\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe war began with an Iraqi incursion into Iran in September 1980, and dragged on for eight years.\u003cbr/\u003eFor eight years, fierce campaigns were interspersed with stalemate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe war officially ended under the U.N. cease-fire on Aug. 20, 1988.
