China considers Taiwan a...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.N. peacekeepers in Macedonia have formally shut down their mission after China vetoed an extension of their mandate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe veto followed Macedonia's establishment of diplomatic ties with Taiwan. \u003cbr/\u003eChina considers Taiwan a renegade province with no right to international relations of its own.\u003cbr/\u003eThe closure comes at a bad time, with the Kosovan conflict threatening to spill over into Macedonia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 1,050 peacekeepers - 362 of them American - were dispatched to the former Yugoslav republic in 1992 on a U.N. mandate.\u003cbr/\u003eThey took up posts along the border with former Yugoslavia, to stop ethnic conflicts  spilling over.\u003cbr/\u003eBut China vetoed the U.N. mission in Macedonia in the Security Council last week in response to Macedonia's establishment of diplomatic ties with Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday a new U-S commander arrived to take command over the U-N troops in Macedonia.\u003cbr/\u003eHis inauguration ceremony is believed to be  one of the last activities of the U-N troops in the republic.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are prepared to execute whatever mission we are given here.
