Today vast areas of land remain unusable because some of the 2...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat  \u003cbr/\u003eMore than twenty years after the Vietnam War, neighbouring Laos is still struggling with the aftermath of being one of  the most heavily bombed nations on earth. \u003cbr/\u003eToday vast areas of land remain unusable because some of the 2 (m) million bombs dropped by the Americans are unexploded.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a United Nations development programme is teaching farmers to raise fish where the bombs dropped, using the craters for fish ponds.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vietnam war left Xieng Khouang's land unusable and full of craters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Americans dropped the equivalent of two tonnes of bombs for every person living there. \u003cbr/\u003eToday even the homes are built on American bomb casings.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom above hundreds of bomb craters scar the provincial landscape. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd more than twenty years after the war, the government of Laos is still trying to cope with the aftermath.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a U-N Development Programme is turning the scars of war into profitable fish ponds.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (In English)    \u003cbr/\u003e\"Laos is a very poor country, one of the poorest in the world. There are food shortages and malnutrition. I think the fisheries project shows how innovative people can be to take advantage of something at first dangerous and then put it to good use.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jan Mattsson, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Representative in Laos\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-N Fisheries programme is teaching farmers how to raise fish in the thousands of bomb craters created by B-52 bombings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe four-year project costs one (m) million U-S dollars and has helped over a thousand farmers to cultivate bomb craters. \u003cbr/\u003eMost important is the removal of any unexploded devices along with water snakes that eat the stocks and bite the keeper. \u003cbr/\u003eFarmers are pleased with the annual 50 kilogrammes of fish that most craters will produce in a year.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (In Lao)  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The project has helped to feed the family better and we now have enough extra (fish) to sell at the market.
