Graves in children's section of San Gregorio\u003cbr/\u003eHaitians flocked to cemeteries carrying rum, candles and hopes for a better future on Sunday, kicking off Voodoo's two-day festival of the dead which takes place every year during the first days of November.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile (m) millions of Mexicans gathered in cemeteries in the early hours of Sunday morning to begin their celebrations of the Day of the Dead.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Port au Prince, Haiti revellers clamoured for a spot atop the oldest grave at Port-au-Prince's National Cemetery, which tradition holds is home to the spirit Baron Samedi, the guardian of the dead.\u003cbr/\u003eAs dark rum flowed freely, they placed flowers and candles at the graves of relatives while revellers danced and sang to thumping music designed to awaken Baron Samedi and his mischievous offspring, Gede.\u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the annual two-day ritual, followers stumbled around in a trance-like state and rubbed hot pepper on their bodies. \u003cbr/\u003eMany called on the spirits, or \"loa,\" for help finding work and relief from difficulties.\u003cbr/\u003eVoodoo, a blend of Christian tenets and African religions fused by slaves, is believed to be practiced by around two thirds of the country's nearly nine (m) million people. \u003cbr/\u003eFor many years, this kind of ritual was condemned as devil worship by established Catholic and Protestant churches in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eBut voodoo's growing popularity prompted the Haitian government in 2003 to sanction it as a religion, allowing priests to legally perform baptisms and marriages.\u003cbr/\u003eSunday's ceremony was an invitation to the spirits to come forward and show themselves. Candles, rum and dancing to drums are considered key components of the ritual.\u003cbr/\u003eVoodoo affirms that honouring the dead on days such as these is a way of healing and protecting the living, for the good of families in the community.\u003cbr/\u003eAs people jammed together under the brutal Caribbean sun, a man portraying Papa Gede - the Baron - climbed the tomb and danced in front of the black cross that tops it, gyrating to exemplify the spirit's playful, erotic nature.\u003cbr/\u003eDressed in white with a black cap, wearing crosses and epaulets, he stuck safety pins through his skin and took long drinks of alcohol from a purple rhinestone-covered bottle, some of which he spat into the crowd.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in the sprawling cemetery, families paid respects to their ancestors with Catholic prayers in Latin, French and Haitian Creole. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile Mexicans visited graveyards to build altars and offerings at the gravesites of relatives.\u003cbr/\u003eIn San Gregorio Atlapulco, 30 miles south of Mexico City, the cemetery became a sea of flickering candles, with lilies, chrysanthemums and cempasuchil (marigolds), also known as the flower of the dead, spread out like carpets over the tombs.\u003cbr/\u003eFamilies begin arriving on the night of the 31st to start cleaning off graves and placing brilliant yellow marigold  flowers - though to guide the dead back to loved ones - and other decorations. \u003cbr/\u003eMany come armed with blankets, chairs, snacks and build fires to stay warm as they spend the night in the cemetery. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first day of the two-day celebration honours deceased children. \u003cbr/\u003e21-year-old Sarai Rufin, who came to the cemetery with her aunts, said this was her favourite part of the celebration. She helped to decorate the grave of an infant sister who would have turned 15 this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Day of the Dead celebration is based on a pre-hispanic belief that the dead return one day a
