I think a lot of traditional cars probably have not lasted because of the lack of quality control. He got his first Beetle just over a year ago.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that considering the age of his Beetle, it's a good, comfortable car.\u003cbr/\u003eThe basic Beetle design was created in the years prior to World War II by car design genius Fedinand Porsche.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are no exact figures available as to how many Beetles are present in Pakistan, but it is likely there are several thousand in road going condition.\u003cbr/\u003eNowadays it is one of the cheapest cars you can buy, with prices for a 'good runner' starting from just five hundred dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the sixties and seventies, Beetles were one of the most common cars on the road in Pakistan, prized especially by well-to-do army officers who would often buy them in Europe and drive them home.\u003cbr/\u003eMost now are almost forty years old or more, but owners say they are still perfect for Pakistani driving conditions, despite the lack of air conditioning. Many have been converted to run on compressed natural gas which is much cheaper than petrol (gasoline) in Pakistan. \u003cbr/\u003eOwner Zohair Haider says the fact there are still so many about is down to the care with which the cars were originally manufactured.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's also due in large part to the attentions of a specialist group of mechanics who work on almost nothing but Volkswagens, or 'foxies' as they are commonly called here.\u003cbr/\u003eMechanic Malik Aziz, nicknamed by his first boss 'Camera' for his good eyesight, has been working on Beetles his entire professional life.\u003cbr/\u003eHe lives close to the capital Islamabad in nearby Rawalpindi with his wife and two young children.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is assisted in his work by specialist VW parts suppliers, who claim they can get their hands on almost any spare part.\u003cbr/\u003eZaffar Mehmood is a spare parts dealer. He says that spare parts used to be imported from overseas when the cars were more popular, but now they come from the Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi.\u003cbr/\u003eCamera has restored more Volkswagens than he says he can count, and maintains a large network of clients who bring their cars to him no matter what the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eCamera doesn't own a VW himself, but most days gets to drive one of the cars he is repairing to and from his house.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he's been working on Beetles from the beginning of his career.\u003cbr/\u003eVolkswagen Beetles have had the longest production run of any single model automobile and are a common sight in many countries around the world, especially in Brazil where manufacturing continued until recently.\u003cbr/\u003eCamera has a staff of three working with him at his garage, located on a street alongside many other garages also catering mostly to Volkswagens. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's vital to keep a close eye on the oil levels, as the air cooled engine is prone to overheat without regular care - in daytime summer temperatures often top 45 degrees Celsius.\u003cbr/\u003eCamera's team will remove, strip down and totally overhaul a tired engine for as little as sixty U.S. dollars plus parts. \u003cbr/\u003eBack at the gathering of proud 'Bug' owners, a cake has been prepared to mark the 70th birthday of the VW Beetle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe foundation stone at the German automakers' Wolfsberg plant was laid back in 1938, but the first production Beetles didn't roll off the assembly line until the following year, 1939.\u003cbr/\u003eZohair Haider says they are especially grateful to the dedicated mechanics in cities across the country, who have done the most to keep these classics on the
