Pan Cheetah Outreach centre\u003cbr/\u003eThe population of the world's fastest big cat is in rapid decline. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom 100,000 to 10,000 in 100 years, means cheetahs could be extinct within the next 10 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has led to an education programme in South Africa to raise awareness of the plight of cheetahs, before it's too late. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fastest land animal in the world reaches speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour.\u003cbr/\u003eBut cheetah numbers are in rapid decline.\u003cbr/\u003e100 years ago there were 100,000 cheetahs. Today there are approximately 10,000 left.\u003cbr/\u003eCampaigners say unless something is done, the most endangered big cat in Africa could be extinct within 10 - 15 years.\u003cbr/\u003eCheetah Outreach is an organisation that campaigns for the survival of the cheetah, as well as designing education programmes to raise awareness of the plight of the big cats.\u003cbr/\u003eLocated at Spier Wine Estate, approximately 50 kilometres from Cape Town, Cheetah Outreach supports a number of conservation programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eA highlight of a visit to the five hectare centre is encountering one of the nine ambassador cheetahs.\u003cbr/\u003eSeeing a cheetah up close is an opportunity to stroke the animal with the knowledge that the fee will go towards cheetah conservation, and that there is a 100 per cent safety record. \u003cbr/\u003eFive and a half year old Joseph is a particularly friendly cheetah, enjoying the attention from visitors.\u003cbr/\u003eLiesl Smith, from Cheetah Outreach, she says Joseph is very friendly and enjoys interacting with people.  \u003cbr/\u003eJamile Siddiqui, a tourist, says touching a cheetah is a dream come true for him. \u003cbr/\u003eBesides fundraising, Cheetah Outreach also creates awareness through education.\u003cbr/\u003e87 pupils from Lehlohonolo Primary School, in Cape Town's Gugulethu township, are learning about cheetah conservation as a part of their school curriculum. \u003cbr/\u003eDawn Glover, from Cheetah Outreach, says educating youngsters about cheetahs is an important tool for their survival.\u003cbr/\u003eThose behind the education programme hope to create a bond between the children and the cheetahs. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the learners are impressed by the cheetah's physical prowess, as ten year old Ikaheng Hlahatsi points out. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite some steps in the right direction, many cheetahs are still killed by farmers to protect their livestock.\u003cbr/\u003eFor this reason, Cheetah Outreach has embarked on a new project to radically reduce livestock loss for South African farmers while helping to conserve cheetahs at the same time.\u003cbr/\u003eThe organisation has adopted a novel approach to protecting livestock.\u003cbr/\u003eCheetah Outreach founder Annie Beckhelling says they're now promoting an  Anatolian Guard dog project.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that five or six years ago in Namibia a scheme was piloted on big open farmlands to use dogs in cheetah territory to keep them away from stock.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe farm Paardenkloof is situated approximately 160 kilometres east of Cape Town, and is one of the 26 farms that have benefited so far from Cheetah Outreach's Anatolian Guard Dog project.\u003cbr/\u003eAnatolian Guard dogs become a part of the livestock herd from the age of three weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eFarmers don't pay the dogs any attention as the Anatolians are encouraged to bond with the herd. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs protect the herd from a wide range of predators as Liesl Smith explains.\u003cbr/\u003eShe adds the goal is to reduce the conflict between livestock farmers and the cheetahs.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Paardenkloof, cheetahs are not a threat, but the two Anatolian Guard dogs keep the sheep and cattle safe from baboon, caracal and leopards.\u003cbr/\u003eFarm manager, Marais van Zyl, used to set gin traps and cages to trap animals preying on his stock.\u003cbr/\u003eBut since introducing the Anatolian Guard dogs in 2005, stock loss has dropped from up to 80 lambs a year to less than one a year.\u003cbr/\u003eVan Zyl says the only difficult part was not being allowed to interact with the dogs.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
