Wide of tigers in the exercise cages\u003cbr/\u003eA breeding centre in Indonesia is celebrating the birth of tiger cubs.\u003cbr/\u003eWild Sumatran tiger mother, Desy, is part of the centre''s extensive breeding programme, to ensure the survival of the species.\u003cbr/\u003eDesy, from Lampung, is pregnant for the fourth time since she was brought to the centre in 2002. \u003cbr/\u003eShe had killed a young boy in the area and was captured by local forestry officials.\u003cbr/\u003eDesy is considered a good breeder because she has had a series of successful pregnancies in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is also well known for nursing her cubs after their birth. \u003cbr/\u003eLigaya Ita Tumbelaka is in charge of keeping a detailed record of Sumatran tigers at the centre, which is located inside a popular safari park.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a studbook keeper, Ligaya maintains the purity of the tiger species and recommends which tigers can be bred. \u003cbr/\u003eLigaya argues that tiger conservation outside of the animal''s natural habitat can be managed well and studied in the breeding centre.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Tiger conservation outside of their habitat must be managed. It is better to bring them to a breeding centre,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sumatran tiger is the most endangered tiger subspecies in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eExperts say that poaching and destruction of the forest habitat, often to make way for plantations, have reduced the Sumatran tiger population to only a few hundred left in the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eAs Desy reaches 90 days into her pregnancy, she spends most of her time in an isolated delivery cage. \u003cbr/\u003eIf it''s sunny, she''s let out of the exercise cage for a few hours in the morning. \u003cbr/\u003eInside the delivery cage, the keeper has installed a lamp and cardboard boxes to keep Desy warm and comfortable.\u003cbr/\u003eLigaya says that Sumatran tigers bred in the centre, such as Desy''s offspring, ensure that there is a reservoir of tigers outside of their habitat in case the wild tiger population becomes critically low.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If the tiger population in the wild diminishes because of things such as illegal trade, habitat fragmentation and forest conversion where these tigers live, there may be a need for Sumatran tigers to be released to the wild. The breeding centre already has a reservoir of tigers which can be released into the wild,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eArsyad has been working as one of the keepers at the tiger breeding centre for ten years. \u003cbr/\u003eHis main duties are to maintain the keeping of the centre and monitor the behaviour of the tigers together with resident vets at the park.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are 26 tigers kept in the centre at present, including wild tigers and those bred in the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eArsyad also keeps track of the breeding programs through a breeding chart hung on the exterior wall of the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe chart shows the pairing of tigers for breeding and mating schedules.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore breeding the tigers, Arsyad makes sure that the tigers come from different locations in the wild in order to avoid inbreeding. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Before we breed Sumatran tigers, we must first know their lineage and where they come from. I am proud that my boys can reproduce,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe birth is the first at the breeding centre this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe centre got started in 1992 and it is considered the best breeding centre for Sumatran tigers in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eIt follows international standards for its cages and daily operation.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom the very beginning, Ligaya says, the centre aimed to protect wild tigers caught in human-tiger conflicts and eventually releasing some tigers back to the wild. \u003cbr/\u003eThe centre has helped release wild tigers in the past. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo tigers were released in a protected Sumatran forest in January with the help of officials from the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Ligaya says she believes that increasing conflicts with humans in their natural habitat indicates that it will be a long time before tigers can be released to the wild in big numbers. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We often hear about conflicts with troubled tigers in their natural habitat, and a lot of them have to be moved elsewhere.
