a day, according to United Nations aid agencies.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith the fishing industry in decline in some areas, people are eager to diversify but rarely have the means to do it.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Tanga region, an American Non-Governmental Organisation has begun teaching villagers how catching crabs can increase their incomes. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's diverting them from the more environmentally harmful practices like dynamite fishing and reef gleaning, and for the first time - many of them are starting to think like business people. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are an estimated seven million people (2002 Tanzanian Population and Housing Census) living along Tanzania's Indian Ocean coastline working in a variety of jobs. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite its idyllic appearance, most people struggle to earn a decent living.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now an American NGO called ACDI/VOCA is offering to teach locals how to develop a mangrove crab export industry. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of would-be entrepreneurs have snapped up the chance to find a more profitable way to earn an income.\u003cbr/\u003eACDI/VOCA's aims are to promote broad-based economic growth and the development of civil society in emerging democracies and developing countries. \u003cbr/\u003eTen villages in the Tanga region, around 350 kilometres (224 miles) north of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, are benefiting from the $1.3 million dollar SEMMA (Sustainable Environmental Management through Mariculture Activities) project - which is being funded by the USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development.) \u003cbr/\u003eThe NGO intends to train ten thousand people during the five year project. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead of giving them hand-outs, ACDI/VOCA is empowering villagers by teaching them the skills they need to know to firstly take care of and fatten the crabs, and then how to link up with exporters so that the crustaceans can be sold to overseas markets at higher prices.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crabs already live wild in the mangroves so it was relatively easy to set up a caged system.\u003cbr/\u003eMohammed Ally's already received training and started his business a month ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThis new project is also benefiting women who traditionally don't take part in fishing activities and normally earn very small incomes. \u003cbr/\u003eHere it is the local culture that when a girl reaches puberty she no longer swims in the sea. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cages though are kept in mangroves and so the women don't have to get their feet wet, just a little muddy. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the women were nervous about handling the crabs at first, they no longer give it a second thought and are visibly proud of their offspring. \u003cbr/\u003eUp until recently Mwanakumbi Rashid's main role was to take care of her family and home. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's now contributing to her household income through her crab business, but it's not all been plain sailing.\u003cbr/\u003eA juvenile crab weighing 200 grammes (0.5 pounds) costs around 200 Tanzanian shillings (approx 0.16 US cents). \u003cbr/\u003eAfter being fattened for 4 weeks it's sold weighing around 500 grammes (1.1 pounds) for up to 800 tanzanian shillings (approx 0.64 US cents). \u003cbr/\u003eAfter two months and weighing a kilo (2.2 pounds) they can fetch up to 2,500 shillings (around $2).\u003cbr/\u003eACDI/VOCA's representative in Tanzania Rebecca Savoie says it's important that women, who are so often sidelined here, are included in the project.\u003cbr/\u003eEric Allard runs Sea Products, a seafood exporting company in Tanga. \u003cbr/\u003eAnnually he exports around 600 tonnes of frozen seafood, including octopus and lobster, for catering in Europe and Asia. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the biggest exporters in the area, he's thinking about reviving his crab sector, but only if farmers here can meet his demand for higher volume.\u003cbr/\u003eIf farmers can group together, create associations and supply larger volumes, they'll be much more attractive to exporters like Eric. \u003cbr/\u003eACDI/VOCA is promoting an entrepreneurial spirit among the communities and aims to help them do just that - by teaching them to think like businessmen and not just labourers. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in the end, the key to increasing these people's incomes and lifting them out of poverty - will depend solely on the communities' own
