Participants dancing at the Chettiar Hindu Temple\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of ethnic Indians gathered on Saturday to celebrate the annual Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Singapore, where some worshipers pierced their bodies with spikes and skewers in devotion.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a carnival like atmosphere prevailing during the day, devotees of the Hindu god Lord Subramaniam pierce their bodies with spikes and display skewers driven into their cheeks and tongue.\u003cbr/\u003eSome people also pulled chariots from hooks embedded in their backs for four kilometers as part of a pilgrimage of penance and piety.\u003cbr/\u003eStarting in the early hours of Saturday morning, people began streaming out of one of the Hindu temples in Singapore's Little India neighbourhood and began their pilgrimage. Up to 9000 people took part in the ceremonies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe most ardent participants carried heavy kavadi - metal arches - on their  shoulders. Many had pierced faces and bodies.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen and children carried brass urns filled with milk on their heads to  symbolise piety.\u003cbr/\u003eThaipusam is the feast of the deity Lord Subramaniam, a son of Shiva and the universal granter of wishes. Participants take part either to ask a favour or fulfill a favour already granted.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the devotees paid homage to the deity Lord Muruga by lancing their backs with steel hooks. Many say that they do not feel pain as they go into a trance-like state.\u003cbr/\u003eThaipusam was brought to Singapore during British colonial rule by 19th Century immigrants from southern
