Even with the country's problems in sanitation and its broken sanitation, we never had this disease," said Joceline Brunache Pierre-Louis, a doctor with the Haitian Health Ministry.
At a treatment centre overseen by Doctors Without Borders in Port au Prince, dozens of patients suffering from cholera receive care.
There are no hard numbers on the number of people who are currently sick.
But Haitian health officials say more than 7,300 people have died and more than 574-thousand others have fallen ill since the 2010 outbreak.
The new report argues that a "definitive statement" about the source of the outbreak cannot yet be made, and calls for the creation of a public database to study cholera strains.
It states that a "perfect storm" of environmental circumstances in 2010 enabled the bacteria to appear, as the impoverished country was hit by a massive earthquake, a hurricane and a very hot summer.
The disease came about soon after the quake.
"It pops out of nowhere, and now you have it in epidemic levels. So obviously just that alone is interesting enough to say OK, we need to study this," said Chad Weber, a research assistant at the University of Florida Emerging Pathogen Institute.
Weber is working at the Public Health Laboratory in Gressier, trying to determine the current status of the epidemic in that area.
He said the researchers were "looking at the environment, we are looking at stool samples, we're looking at the built environments, roadways and buildings where waters sources are, and using all that to meld together a comprehensive view of what's going on with cholera."
Cholera, whose symptoms consist of rapid dehydration and vomiting, is spread through water or food contaminated by the bacterium - easily in Haiti because the country lacks a proper sewage and sanitation system.
In November 2010, a week of anti-UN riots broke out when suspicions were first raised that the Nepalese UN peacekeepers had brought the disease with them to the island.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon ordered an investigation and the resulting report revealed that there was a "perfect match" between cholera strains found in Haiti and Nepal, but it avoided pinning blame.
The UN is at the centre of a legal complaint even though it enjoys immunity in Haiti and other countries because of a Status of Forces Agreement.
The outcome could change the way the UN missions can be held legally accountable.
The new report's findings have met plenty of scientific resistance.
Many scientists say the second cholera strain cited by the report was unlikely to have caused the outbreak because it's nontoxic, naturally inhabits bodies of water around the world and is unlikely to trigger epidemics.
Unlike the strain that sickened so many Haitians, this one is believed to cause only mild diarrhoea and isn't life-threatening.
Port au Prince - Recent
1.
