We're in an area where people are fishermen so there are hooks and knifes and those kinds of things and there are lots of open wounds. We also see a lot of fungal kinds of things, things that probably have developed in the jungle and so we're able to treat those as well.\"    \u003cbr/\u003eWhile open to everyone, this year's mission has a focus on women's health and reproductive health care.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're trying to teach females here how to do natural birth control because of course birth control for us - medication wise, contraceptive wise, is something they cannot afford here,\" says Dr. Heidi Aghajani. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So we teach them how to count their menstrual cycle by days when they should be having intercourse if they do actually want to have a child because that can also be a problem and when to not have intercourse to not get pregnant.\"    \u003cbr/\u003eFor patients like Sey Khin, poverty means she cannot afford to take good care of her health.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have pain here in my joints, in my arms and legs,\" she says. \"And I have a lot of children so I don't have the money to take care of my health or to go and see a doctor.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSok Khun has a suspected case of TB.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I came here because I heard that the doctors were here examining people today and I have a very bad chest, a bad cough,\" he says. \"I'm coughing all the time so I came to ask for medicine to heal it.\"   \u003cbr/\u003eThe medical mission runs educational workshops for the village children where they learn the importance of basics like washing hands and brushing teeth. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We know that the best way to avoid needing medical attention is preventative,\" says Vanderslice. \u003cbr/\u003e\"That if you can figure it out for yourself - if you know that brushing your teeth makes a difference, that having clean hands makes a difference in your health, then you create a healthier population.\" \u003cbr/\u003eFor patients too sick to attend the clinic, doctors are available for house calls.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhile most conditions are treatable, those with more serious ailments are sent to the mainland for treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe IMR medical mission consists of six clinics spread over six days in four different locations.\u003cbr/\u003eA total of 557 people have been treated by the doctors, representing around 1/4 of the population of the Koh Rong Archipelago.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, 130 women have attended female health workshops and 90 children attended dental education workshops.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medical missions are key in helping maintain a health population on the islands, says Wayne McCullum, Executive Director of the Song Saa Foundation which helped to organise the trip.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The archipelago here, the Koh Rong Archipelago, there's always been, there's challenges with the provision of public services, particularly health,\" he explains. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So one of the challenges is it's so far from the mainland for people to get medical care and it's also quite prohibitively expensive.
