Long shot of jungle and huts in Mae La refugee camp\u003cbr/\u003e21 Various of Mae La refugee camp buildings\u003cbr/\u003eAs Myanmar takes its first steps towards democracy, ethnic Karen landmine victims living in a refuge near the Thai-Myanmar border could be forced back into the country.\u003cbr/\u003eSaw Pa Ko's voice is clear and rings out as he leads other former Karen National Liberation Army soldiers in a selection of Christian church hymns at the Mae La refugee camp near the Thai-Myanmar border.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the men here are victims of landline explosions and have terrible battle scars. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are all blind, most are missing arms and or a leg.\u003cbr/\u003eLandmines and their use against civilian populations is well documented in Myanmar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country today faces one of the most severe landmine problems in the world according to the DCA Mine Action group.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ethnic Karen, the largest minority in Myanmar, have been waging a war for an independent homeland against whatever government that has been in power in Myanmar - formally Burma - since the end of World War II. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 2000 the \"Karen Handicap Welfare Association\" has provided shelter and basic needs for these former soldiers. Locally it is known as \"Care Villa.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated 50,000 Karen refugees live in this jagged piece of mountain jungle wedged next to the border.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the centre's head, Lerlay Kler, the families of the men here, themselves refugees, had to give up taking care of them because the burden was too great.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"This is the Care Villa. The Care Villa was founded in 2000 and the purpose is we are taking care of the landmine victims, because most of them have landmine injuries, because of the landmines they lost their sight, their arms and their legs.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"The camp here there are more than 50,000 people, this Care Villa we are taking on 15 landmine victims, but in all the camp there are more than 400 people,\" says LerLay Kler.\u003cbr/\u003eNow these men are facing the prospect of being returned to their homeland and they are frightened.  \u003cbr/\u003eTalks between the Burmese government and the Karen are underway and while many in the international community see this as an encouraging sign Saw Paw Ko and others simply do not trust the Myanmar government at any level.\u003cbr/\u003eSaw Paw Ko says: \"I lived in Hlaingbwe township. I was a soldier with the Karen National Liberation Army and I was injured by a landmine in the village in 2002.  I stepped on the landmine. They took me to Mae Sot hospital for a month before I came to Mae La camp. rations.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders of ASEAN will hold a two-day summit - taking place this year in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh to try to resolve the issue.\u003cbr/\u003eThey praised Myanmar for its recent parliamentary elections and said they will call on western nations to lift economic sanctions on the country.\u003cbr/\u003eCambodia - the 10-nation ASEAN's steward this year - has wanted to focus on non-politically volatile issues such as the goal of transforming Southeast Asia from a disparate cluster of fledgeling democracies, socialist states and monarchies into a European
