Wide of audience applauding\u003cbr/\u003eAn international puppet festival in Iran has brought together performers from around the globe in a riot of colour and music.\u003cbr/\u003eThe event celebrates one of iran's oldest puppet characters, Mobarak.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's event was the13th annual Tehran International Puppet Theatre Festival Mobarak.\u003cbr/\u003eTroupes from countries including Germany, France, Poland, Bosnia, Argentina, Turkey, Italy, Britain, Canada, Switzerland, and the Netherlands staged their plays for children and adults alike.\u003cbr/\u003eMobarak is one of Iran's oldest  puppet characters. It was used to amuse people when other entertainment media were scarce and watching puppet shows was a popular leisure hobby.\u003cbr/\u003eThe figure is usually dressed in red and was based upon a slave who was the king's harlequin, or joker, in old Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eMobarak was quick witted and wouldn't shy away from making fun of the king's mistakes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe character can appear in many sizes and as a hand puppet, a rod puppet or a glove puppet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival was held in Tehran's Theatre Shahr Complex as well as in local amphitheaters and included a centuries-old Iranian show, Kheimeh Shab-Bazi.\u003cbr/\u003eKheimeh Shab-Bazi is a Persian traditional puppet show which is performed in a small chamber by a musical performer and a person called a morshed (mentor). The dialogue takes place between the morshed and the puppets.\u003cbr/\u003eMeysam Yousefi is a puppet shows director. According to Meysam, Iran's Mobarak figure is now officially recognized by the UNIMA - the worldwide puppetry organisation. \u003cbr/\u003eUNIMA looks at ways of developing the art of puppetry, as well as promoting values such as peace and mutual understanding between different peoples.\u003cbr/\u003eUNIMA was founded in Prague in 1929 and is affiliated to UNESCO and it is a member of the International Theatre Institute.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the festival in Tehran Mobarak was unveiled as the event mascot.\u003cbr/\u003eAlan Nobok, a puppeteer from the Netherlands, says that funny figures like Mobarak can be found in every culture, like the Jan Klaassen in her own country.\u003cbr/\u003eJan Klaassen is a real Amsterdam working-class boy, never at a loss for words and with a great sense of humour.\u003cbr/\u003eWhoever wrongs him is sure to become the object of his mockery and get a flogging with his stick.\u003cbr/\u003eTina Abeshzadeh is a puppet-designer and puppet-maker who managed a workshop at the festival entitled 'how to make puppets with recyclable trash'. \u003cbr/\u003eShe has her own permanent puppet gallery in northern Tehran, showcasing various types of Mobarak puppets. \u003cbr/\u003eTina says that Iranian culture showcases more than Mobarak but the puppet has become something of a symbol for the profession in Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eTehran's puppet festival was a non-competitive event but there was a play-writing competition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Last Resort\" by British director Ashley Dean and Maryam Sa'adat's \"The Insects Concert\" from Iran were both
