Wide of ship on side in water with crane in background\u003cbr/\u003eThe former captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner came to an Italian court on Monday to hear the evidence against him.\u003cbr/\u003eThe preliminary hearing also was attended by passengers who survived the collision in January in which 32 people died.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring Monday's hearing experts will present the analysis of the data coming from the black-box and recording of the voices on the command deck.\u003cbr/\u003eThe giant cruise ship struck a reef off the Tuscan island of Giglio on January 13, after Captain Francesco Schettino veered off course and steered the liner close to shore in an apparent stunt. \u003cbr/\u003eThirty-two passengers and crew members died in the frantic and delayed evacuation. \u003cbr/\u003eSchettino has been jailed for investigation of manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing a shipwreck and after a period of house arrest is now free to move only in his hometown Meta di Sorrento, near Naples.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is still in its preliminary investigations stage and neither Schettino nor Costa have been indicted yet. \u003cbr/\u003eHearings this week will help decide whether a judge will order trial for Schettino. He denies the charges. \u003cbr/\u003eAny trial is unlikely to begin before next year.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 1,000 survivors, victims' relatives and their lawyers are attending the closed-door hearing to discuss the evidence against Schettino and eight other defendants, including crew members and officials from Concordia owner Costa Crociere SpA, which is owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to look him (Captain Schettino) in the eyes and see how he will react to the accusations,\" said German passenger Michael Liessen on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eLast month, four court-appointed experts delivered a 270-page report of what went wrong that night based on an analysis of data recorders, ship communications equipment, testimony and other evidence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe experts - two admirals and two engineers - lay most of the blame for the collision with the reef and the botched evacuation on Schettino. \u003cbr/\u003eBut they also noted that not all crew members understood Italian, not all had current certification for evacuation procedures, and not all passengers had participated in evacuation drills.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The reason these people died was not because of captain Schettino, the reason these people died was because the corporations were negligent in practices and safety procedures. There was no reason for anyone to die,\" said Peter Ronai, the lawyer representing a Hungarian violinist who died in the accident and ten survivors.\u003cbr/\u003ePassengers have described a confused and delayed evacuation, with many of the lifeboats unable to be lowered because the boat was listing too far to one side. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the 4,200 people aboard jumped into the Mediterranean and swam to Giglio, while others had to be plucked from the vessel by rescue helicopters hours after the collision.\u003cbr/\u003eSchettino has insisted that by guiding the stricken ship to shallower waters near Giglio's port instead of immediately ordering an evacuation he potentially saved lives. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has claimed that another official, and not he, was at the helm when the ship struck.\u003cbr/\u003eThe timeline in the expert report, however, makes clear that he had assumed command six minutes before the ship struck the reef.\u003cbr/\u003eCosta, owned by the US cruise company Carnival, has contracted Titan and Micoperi, an Italian and an American salvage company, to bring the huge shipwreck of the Concordia away from Giglio island, in order to avoid any further
