Nations including the US and Mexico say research can be carried out on whales accidentally caught in fishing nets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe IWC must still consider a proposal by South Korea to resume purportedly scientific whaling, which the US and other countries are expected to oppose when it is formally presented at a meeting of commission experts next year.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother continuing issue is a proposal by European and Latin American countries, plus the US, to create a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic, again rejected at the Panama meeting.\u003cbr/\u003eAt last year's session, Japan and other pro-whaling nations walked out to protest at the idea, which has already failed to win approval at several previous IWC meetings.\u003cbr/\u003eThis initiative was rejected by 34 countries, including the Latin American bloc, India and Gabon. Another 25 nations voted in favour and three abstaining.\u003cbr/\u003eWhaling quotas were renewed whaling for subsistence for indigenous groups in Alaska, northeastern Russia and the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
