Wednesday, one of the company's top executives delivered the same message to Capitol Hill where House lawmakers held a hearing on the issue.  \u003cbr/\u003eHoshiri Shimizu, a Takata senior vice president for global quality assurance appeared at the hearing, along with executives from Honda, BMW and Toyota. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are confident that the inflators we are producing today are safe because we have confidence in the integrity of our engineering and our current manufacturing processes here in the U.S. and across the world,\" Shimizu said.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least five deaths and dozens of injuries have been linked to the problem worldwide.  The government says air bag's inflators can explode with too much force, spewing shrapnel into the passenger compartment. \u003cbr/\u003eTakata thinks a national recall would add 8 million vehicles to existing recalls.\u003cbr/\u003eThose have been limited so far to high-humidity areas in Florida, Hawaii, along the Gulf Coast and in some U.S. territories. Takata has maintained that prolonged exposure to airborne moisture can cause the inflator propellant to burn faster than designed, causing it to explode with too much force.\u003cbr/\u003eNHTSA has called Takata's decision \"disappointing\" and said it will review the response to determine the agency's next steps. \u003cbr/\u003eA week ago, the agency threatened civil fines and legal action if Takata didn't declare the driver's air bag inflators defective and agree to the recall. It can impose fines of up to $35 million.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the hearing, an executive from Honda, one of Takata's biggest customers, said it would expand its recall of driver's side air bags across the U.S. So far automakers have recalled about 14 million vehicles worldwide for Takata air bag problems, including 8 million in the U.S.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington, DC - December 3, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
