Various shot of coca fortune telling
Coca chewing is something of a national pastime in Bolivia.
The South American country is proud of its coca industry and President Evo Morales recently announced plans to spend $300,000 to develop legal markets for coca. (February 2008)
However coca is the key ingredient in the narcotic cocaine and a U.N.-affiliated drug watchdog has called for the abolition of traditional uses of the leaf long revered in the Andes.
But by emphasising its use in everyday products such as tea, flour and herbal medicines, Morales hopes to rescue the crop from the drug trade.
Farmers at La Paz's coca market have travelled by truck, with their families in tow, from the Yungas region to get to the coca market in La Paz.
It's a hair raising 10 hour drive but they make the journey once every three months, when their crop of coca leaves is harvested.
Twenty thousand farming families from the Yungas depend on the Villa Fatima market.
They come to sell their coca leaves by the kilo - it sells at just over $4 per kg (2.2lb).
The coca here is intended for traditional use only.
Traders need to have a licence to buy or sell coca at the market. But those who come rarely want to be filmed - they presume cameras are there to accuse them of cocaine production.
For Catalina, like many other Bolivians, coca is everything but. Bolivians have chewed coca as a mild stimulant for centuries - to get rid of altitude sickness, fatigue and hunger.
Hernan Justo - coca farmer and manager of the market - says he can't understand opposition to selling coca. But Bolivia remains the world's third-largest producer of cocaine after Colombia and Peru.
Bolivia's President Evo Morales, a former coca grower, has stepped up anti-cocaine enforcement - burning coca leaves to comply with US drug enforcement as part of Washington's war on drugs.
But for Morales, anti-cocaine policies should not mean anti-coca policies. While the US pushes to criminalise the leaf, Morales actually wants to produce more of it.
He has lobbied to remove coca from the 1961 convention, which blacklists it alongside cocaine and heroine, and wants to increase production by nearly double.
He says there are thousands of Bolivian farmers who make their living growing coca. And the plan is to commercialise it.
Morales' promotion of the coca leaf is a point of contention within the international community, particularly for the U.S., which has spent decades and hundreds of millions of dollars fighting Bolivia's crop as part of its war on drugs.
But the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs lists the leaf alongside cocaine, heroin and opium as a Schedule I narcotic, and declared that coca chewing (a custom that predates the Inca empire) should be "abolished" worldwide by 1987.
The International Narcotics Control Board, charged with enforcing the 47-year-old treaty, released an annual report in March 2008 chiding Bolivia for not having followed the convention guidelines.
Hernan Justo says Bolivia needs to sell coca derived products around the world.
In its natural form, the leaf is sacred to indigenous groups, and a central part of Bolivian life. It is served as tea instead of coffee in La Paz offices, and chewed as a mild stimulant by miners and truck drivers to get through long working days.
Sdenka Silva, anthropologist and co-founder of La Paz's Coca Museum, says coca is an intrinsic part of symbolic exchanges in Bolivian communities.
For Bolivia's Aymara and Quechua Indians coca is more than just sustenance.
In a local market far from the tourist haunts, people go to witchdoctors who pray or to make offerings to Pachamama on their behalf.
You can have spells cast - maybe for a promotion at work, or black magic to bring misfortune on an enemy.

<div class='action-container flex
