Various of robot walking\u003cbr/\u003eScientists in German have developed a prototype spider robot.\u003cbr/\u003eThey hope the robot will have a wide range of uses from aiding emergency relief teams during natural disasters to mine clearance following war.\u003cbr/\u003eIf you are afraid of spiders look away now.\u003cbr/\u003eMeet one of the newest additions to the worldwide robot family, the spider robot.\u003cbr/\u003eThis lightweight robot with its eight legs and an unmistakable spider shape has been developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart, Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eDue to the spider shaped design, four of its legs are constantly on the ground while the other four step forward, giving the robot great stability. \u003cbr/\u003eThe robot contains very little in regards to electronics and no hard mechanics found in most other robots. \u003cbr/\u003eRather, the robot is made out of plastic and powered by compressed air.\u003cbr/\u003eThe air is pumped in the artificial limbs, which makes them stretch and move the robot forward.\u003cbr/\u003eIt also makes the robot extremely lightweight.\u003cbr/\u003eJannis Breuninger, product developer at Fraunhofer IPA, says powering the robot with air also means it can be operated almost anywhere.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Compressed air, in general, exists everywhere, it's available everywhere. This means that we can operate the spider anywhere with a simple air pump.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers at IPA have calculated that each spider robot costs about 500 euro to produce, far cheaper than most other robot designs.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, because the robots are cheap and easy to produce they can quickly be made in case of an emergency, like after an earthquake when hundreds of robots might be needed to help search for survivors.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robots could be equipped with cameras to send live video back to a control room.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Breuninger this is also when the spider shaped design becomes important.\u003cbr/\u003e \"The walking robot is suitable for the usage in catastrophe areas. Because he has a very stable motion that means that we can operate in very rough terrain.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs the robots are extremely cheap to make they could be made to explode, quite literally.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Breuninger hundreds of robots could be made for very little investment and then sent in to areas with landmines. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We could also use the robot for mine searching. Due to the cheap production we can produce big amounts that can walk over the mines and trigger the detonation. So, the robots would effectively be doing mine clearing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOriginally a student project, the robot was created using a generative production technology; also know as a 3-D printing process. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 3-D printer layers of fine polyamide-12 powder is applied and then melted with by a laser beam.\u003cbr/\u003eThe process is repeated until one complete part of the robot - like one leg- has been created.\u003cbr/\u003eThe assembling of the different parts is easy.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe 3-D printing process also means that complex structures and can be created quickly.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Andreas Fischer, industrial designer at Fraunhofer IPA, it also means that the production of the robots is cheap.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The main advantage of generative productions is obviously that you can individualise the process. they are very encouraged by the results. \u003cbr/\u003eThe next step is to improve the steering and control of the spider.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first spider robot was shown at the handling, assembly and
