It was under Turkish administration for 200 years. In 1878, Britain took over by treaty, and in 1914, Cyprus was annexed to the British Crown. A year later, it was conditionally offered to Greece, but the offer was declined. In 1955, Sir John Harding attempted to reconcile Greek and Turkish view-points. He held discussions with Archbishop Makarios who led the Greek Cypriot demand for ENOSIS: Union with Greece. All British proposals were rejected and a long period of riots and outrages followed. Movietone pictures, taken at this time, tell the story. British Security Forces were constantly coping with outbreaks of violence, and the number of murders committed by EOKA (the underground terrorist organisation) mounted. So the curfew was found to be an effective method of restoring at least temporary calm. Sir Hugh Foot, who took over from Sir John Harding as Governor, tried a new approach: going round the island, talking to people. Presently, trouble flared up again, this time for Turkish Cypriots, clashing with Greek Cypriots. A new plan, described as \"\"an adventure in partnership\"\", was offered as a basis for reconciliation and peace in Cyprus. Royal Marine Commandos and the Guards have been sent out. Cyprus is Britain's base in the Middle East, moving from one crisis to another, and whose problem has threatened to split NATO.
