When all attempts to reason had failed, they returned the fire which had been opened by Egyptians from the Bureau Sanitaire Buildings. The climax of the three-hour battle that followed was the bayonet assault by the infantry, the surrender of surviving Egyptian police (over forty were killed and many others injured) and the taking of large quantities of arms and ammunition.
